Rabiu Kwankwaso, former Governor of Kano State, says the crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has weakened it as an opposition.
There appears to be no end in sight at the moment to the crisis rocking the national leadership of the PDP as some members of the National Working Committee are divided on the issue. While some want the embattled chairman, Secondus to remain especially as the tenure of the National Executive Committee, NEC, he leads ends in four months time, others want him to quit.
The PDP chieftain said this on Friday, September 03, 2021 when he featured in an interview with BBC Hausa.
Kwankwaso said the crisis is “heightened by those who are after leadership” of the party.
“Now the strength of the party has reduced and in the end what will happen is that it will tear us apart,” he said.
“You see the result will not help us since we do not have a president and we do not have many governors.
“People like me have nothing to do with the crisis. I’m after what will bring development to people; every good leader should focus on that.
“The party chairman has only one month left. I think it’s better to wait so that we can emerge stronger.
“But the crisis is heightened by those who are after leadership. They are not doing it for the betterment of their people.”
The opposition party has lost several key members to the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a result of its internal crisis.
Uche Secondus, the embattled national chairman of the PDP, has been under increased pressure to resign from office. Hs has also accused of working against the interest of the South East
But Secondus who denied the allegations accused an unnamed PDP chieftain of moves to dent his image so as to pave way for him to hijack the structures of the party.
The PDP boss, speaking through his Media Adviser, Ike Abonyi asked: “Why the recent disquiet in the PDP a few months to the national convention and why is somebody rooting for a caretaker committee to run the affairs of the party?”
“The media office of the national chairman is privy to an intelligence that the strong party chieftain bent on hijacking the party structure for destruction is still on the loose with the main agenda of denting the image of Prince Uche Secondus.
“Reports reaching this office show clearly that this character is deploying all devious means to try and diminish the person and character of the national chairman with a view to having his way of ultimately hijacking the structure for his disproportionately large ambition.
“We therefore wish to alert the general public particularly media houses and party stakeholders to look out for strange deployment of luring gifts from this destructive ‘Father Christmas’ all aimed at having a grip on the soul of our party by having a caretaker commit-tee.
“What continues to shock many party observers is the real reason behind the desperation of this man to get at the national chairman and the quantum of public funds being expended to achieve this illicit goal few months to the national convention.”
