Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, has been suspended as an honorary president of the International Judo Federation (IJF).
Putin was removed from office as a result of the invasion of Ukraine, which resulted in the deaths of hundreds of people and the destruction of property.
The sport’s governing body revealed the development on Sunday.
The Russian president, who has faced criticism from world leaders, has also been dismissed as the federation’s envoy.
The statement reads, “In light of the ongoing war conflict in Ukraine, the International Judo Federation announces the suspension of Mr Vladimir Putin’s status as Honorary President and Ambassador of the International Judo Federation.”
In a related development, Femi Fani-Kayode, a former minister of aviation, has chastised European countries for preventing Nigerians and Africans from accessing their countries owing to the conflict.
In a Twitter tweet, Fani-Kayode condemned the development as a racist act.
