An appeal has gone to the Federal and State Governments to do everything within their power to sustain the baking industry, in order for it to survive.
The President Premium Breadmakers Association of Nigeria, PBAN, Mr Tosan Jemide who made the appeal at a news briefing in Lagos, said bakers in the County can no longer bear the high costs involved in running the business.
Mr Jemide stressed that bakers of bread and confectioneries makers are operating at a loss due to increasing cost of ingredients such as flour, sugar, nylon, milk, vegetable oil, butter and preservatives.
Mr Jemide therefore appealed to the Federal Government to support millers, sugar refiners, baking ingredient manufacturers and suppliers by giving them access to Foreign exchange.
On her part, a member of PBAM, Mrs Yetunde Adeyemi, said with the way things are, it was imperative that bread makers would increase the prices of bread.
The News Conference titled “we can’t breathe any longer” is a collaboration between the Premium Breadmakers Association of Nigeria (PBAN) and the Association of Master Bakers and Caterers of Nigeria (AMBCN).
