Authorities in Borno State have decided to raise teachers’ pay to the federal government’s statutory minimum wage.
This means that no teacher would be paid less than the N30,000 monthly minimum.
Basic teachers in the state are apparently underpaid, with graduates with 10 to 15 years of service receiving N13, 000 per month.
Governor Babagana Zulum declared during the inauguration of the reconstituted State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and the Audit Commission that efforts will be made to improve education quality by increasing teacher motivation.
He said, “The quality of education is declining due to weak salaries.
“We will make sure teachers at least collect the minimum wage of N30, 000.”
He encouraged SUBEB to take steps that would pave the way for a compensation increase for teachers.
He stated that committees would visit schools around the state and administer competency exams to instructors to determine who has a thorough understanding of the subject matter and curriculum, as well as who will receive additional training to advance their professional knowledge.
He stated that teachers who were deemed to be competent would have their pay raised, while those who were unable to reach the requisite criteria following in-service training would be changed to non-academic employees.
Professor Bulama Kagu, the chairman of SUBEB, stated that the board would get right to work.
Meanwhile, Ibrahim Mohammed Lawallam is the chairman of the newly inaugurated Audit Commission.
