Bayern Munich crushed Barcelona 3-0 in the Champions League’s last group game on Wednesday night.
In the reverse fixture of the group E tie, the German Bundesliga winners had defeated the Spanish side 3-0.
Bayern took the lead when Thomas Muller’s header narrowly cleared the line after Robert Lewandowski’s cross reached him. Leroy Sane extended Bayern’s lead with a spectacular 30-yard shot.
On an ugly evening for Barcelona, Jamal Musiala added a third goal in the second half with a straightforward finish after a pull-back from Alphonso Davies.
Barcelona was looking to win the game in order to advance to the round of 16 of the competition at the expense of Benfica.
However, as a result of the loss, Barca is no longer in contention, as Benfica won the group’s runners-up slot and advanced to the knockout phase.
Benfica overcame Dynamo Kyiv 2-0 at home to secure all three points and vault Barcelona into second place, behind runaway group leaders Bayern.
Lille won Group G with a 3-1 victory over Wolfsburg, while RB Salzburg defeated Sevilla 1-0 to advance to the final 16 of the competition.
Young Boys held Manchester United to a 1-1 draw in Group F, while the game between Atalanta and Villarreal was postponed due to snow.
The Red Devils have already qualified for the knockout stage after winning their group, while the other game will determine which team will advance from the group.
