Governor of Bayelsa State, Douye Diri, disputed with opponents of the state over the weekend, claiming that the state is not underperforming.
Governor Diri made the remarks at the start of a three-day solemn assembly held at the Chief DSP Alamieyeseigha Banquet Hall, Government House, Yenagoa, in preparation for the 2021 Bayelsa Annual Thanksgiving Celebrations.
The governor, speaking via his deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, stressed that Bayelsa is not behind any of the other states established on the same day by former Head of State General Sani Abacha (late).
Bayelsa was underdeveloped at the time of its inception, according to Diri, who challenged opponents to be objective in their comparisons.
He emphasized that, unlike its counterparts, everything put on the ground was built from the ground up by consecutive administrations from the military era to the present, in extremely difficult terrain and with little resources.
As a result, Governor Diri asked residents of the state not to be disheartened and to speak down to their leaders and government, but rather to work together to move the state forward.
The Governor believes that developing Bayelsa is a community obligation that should not be entrusted solely to those in positions of power.
He said: “Bayelsa State is dear to us. The task of development is a collective responsibility. It is only when we come together and play our roles that we can have a viable state.
“I don’t believe that Bayelsa has not progressed as a state. When you reflect on the status of Bayelsa today and what it was 25 years ago, you will have every reason to thank God and be grateful to Him.
“If we continue to speak ill of our leaders and of our state, the state would remain desecrated and backward. Let us speak good of our leaders and our state.”
Reverend T.Y. Emmanuel claimed God had done his part for the state in his exhortation, which was based on Jeremiah Chapter 29 verse 11, and that “now it is up to the people to work hard and take Bayelsa to the next level of development.”
Reverend T.Y. Emmanuel emphasized the importance of Bayelsans banding together after each election season, putting their political differences aside and working together to build the state.
Dr. (Mrs.) Gloria Douye Diri, the Bayelsa First Lady, read the only Bible lesson of the service, and special prayers were made for the president, vice president, governor, deputy governor, Bayelsa state, and Nigeria.
