Professor Bolaji Owasanoye, the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), has warned that weak governance and corruption are feeding insecurity in Nigeria.
This statement was delivered by Owasanoye in Abuja while addressing as a Guest Lecturer to the National Defence College of Nigeria’s Course 30 participants.
He addressed the audience on the following topic: ‘Whole of Society Approach in the Fight Against Corruption and Human Security in Nigeria.’
According to a statement released by the Commission, corruption has crippled the state and ruined its ability to supply security and paramilitary organizations with the necessary training and equipment.
Owasanoye said, “Bad governance, corruption and the collapse of the rule of law lead to insecurity.”
The ICPC Boss, when asked how widespread corruption in defense spending may affect a country’s peace and security, warned that a single transaction involving large quantities of money could have a rapid and irreversible impact.
He said, “Direct looting of treasury, Illicit Financial Flows, tax evasion, misapplication of funds, budget padding, ghost workers, deliberate elephant projects, project abandonment, contracts and procurement abuse have huge implications on development and human security.
“Without development, there can be no peace or security and without peace and security human development is a mirage,”
