The former Military President, General Ibrahim Babangida, has lent a voice to continuous call for restructuring of the Country, to assist in the achievement of true Federalism, devolution of power as well as creation of State Police.
The former President sated this while chatting with newsmen, on the occasion of the Country’s diamond Independence anniversary celebrations in Abuja.
He explained that the Nigerian Federation as currently structured, was in need of Reforms that would emphasize the individual strength and advantages of the component units, so that the Government can work to improve the lives of Nigerians.
Gen. IBB retired, said the departure from the norm, was expedient now, noting that reforms which would put the cyountry on the same pedestal with the advanced democracies, are the in- thing now.
He strongly advocated devolution of power to the extent that, more responsibilities should be given to the States while the Federal Government should be vested only with the responsibility of overseeing Foreign Policy, Defense and the ways of enhancing the nation’s economy.
Added to this, the former President stressed the need for the commencement of the process of having State Police, noting that policing has now become so sophisticated that, there are newer methods of their effective operations while also appealing to the Nigerian Media, to dwell more on developmental stories and to be a bit circumspect, in their daily news reportage.
