Some armed robbers are reported to have caused a major commotion in a market in Edo State.
Thieves stormed the yam market along Dawson Road next to the forest road junction in Benin City, Edo state on Tuesday, 17th November, 2020
The armed men, who assaulted almost all the merchants in the market, held them hostage for several hours before leaving the market arena.
It was gathered that some dealers who couldn’t cope with the sight of a gun collapsed on the spot.
According to an eyewitness, the armed robbers entered the market at noon pretending to be genuine customers and immediately brandished their weapons for merchants to see.
The situation caused some of the merchants to run for safety, but others, who were unable to escape the scene, especially the elderly, were trapped and their money and mobile phones were successfully stolen.
Similarly, another group of suspected armed robbers on Tuesday raided the apartment of a University of Benin professor and took his valuables.
The speaker, who wanted his name and department not to be mentioned, said armed robbers broke into his apartment on the GRA axis around 3:30 am.
The head teacher said that ungodly visitors went through the fence to access his apartment.
The armed robbers managed to strip him of his money, mobile phones and some personal items, including a Toyota RAV4 jeep.
The police public relations officer, SP, Chidi Nwabuzor could not be reached for comment as he left his calls unanswered.
