Mbazulike Iloka, the newly sworn-in Transition Committee Chairman, Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State, has been suspended by the State Government over his wife’s sudden death.
In a suspension letter signed by the Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, Tonycollins Nwabuwanne, Iloka’s suspension is as a result of the sudden death of his wife, Chidiebere, on Sunday and it takes effect from today, August 12, 2022.
According to the letter, the council boss was asked to hand over to the Head of the local government administration, pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation over the death of his wife.
Part of the letter read, “Following the sad and sudden death of your wife, late Mrs Chidiebere Iloka, on the 7 of August, 2022, there has been a massive public outcry over the circumstances leading to the cause of her death, including alleged possible homicide.
“While you are presumed innocent until the completion of investigations, it has become imperative that you should step aside to allow unfettered investigations and justice.”
Iloka was accused by the family of his wife of being behind her sudden death last Sunday, August 7, just a few days after he was sworn into office.
They alleged that she caught him when he picked some young ladies she suspected to be his side chicks at an event they attended on Saturday evening.
She was said to have tried to stop his husband from picking up the ladies but he refused to listen to her.
They further alleged that following the misunderstanding generated by the incident, the council boss in anger descended on his wife on Sunday morning and beat her to death.
However, Mbazulike swiftly denied the allegation. Narrating his side of the story, the council boss said his wife suddenly slumped and died.
His claims have however been rejected by the deceased’s family. They accused Mbazukuike of gross domestic violence as he was in the habit of beating his wife over every argument.
A source from the family said that when they arrived at the scene of the incident, they found Chidiebere’s corpse on the floor with marks of bruises and cuts on her body.
It was learned that the police has commenced an investigation into the matter while the corpse of the deceased has been deposited at the morgue for post-mortem examination.
