Senator Ibikunle Amosun, the former governor of Ogun State, is expected to declare his candidacy for the president in 2023 on May 5.
His formal contest announcement has been set for the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, to conclude his continuing engagements with key stakeholders around the country.
According to a source close to the Nigerian Tribune, the former governor has been pressured by a number of individuals and groups to run for the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential ticket in 2023.
The immediate past two-term governor and current senator from Ogun Central senatorial district is one of the political bigwigs who helped form the ruling party in the run-up to the 2015 general election, as he was also a key figure in the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), one of the APC’s legacy parties.
Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo; Senator Bola Tinubu, the party’s national leader; Minister of Labour and Engagement, Dr Chris Ngige; Senator Ken Nnamani, a former president of the Senate; Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State; Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi; and Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State are among the APC’s chieftains in the race for the party’s ticket.
Except for the governor of Kogi State, all of the other candidates hail from the south, with Osinbajo and Amosun hailing from Ogun State.
