Senators Godswill Akpabio and Jibrin Barau have been elected President and Deputy Senate President of the 10th National Assembly, respectively.
On Tuesday, Senator Godswill Akpabio easily defeated Senator Abdul’aziz Yari to win the position of Senate President. Senator Jibrin Barau also won the position of Deputy Senate President of the 10th National Assembly without a challenge.

Senator Dave Umahi nominated Senator Barau as the Deputy Senate President and gave his citation before the nominee accepted the nomination. The former governor of Akwa Ibom won the 10th Senate election with 63 votes, defeating Senator Yari with 46 votes.
Since Nigeria gained independence in 1960, Akpabio is the first person from the South to hold the office of Senate President.
Senator Ahmad Lawan, who is also a member of the 10th Senate, was succeeded by Senator Akpabio, who was then sworn in as president of the Senate for the 10th National Assembly.
