Prof Uche Ikonne, the immediate past Vice-Chancellor of Abia State University, Uturu, and the Peoples Democratic Party’s consensus governorship candidate, picked his party’s nomination form on Wednesday ahead of the Abia State PDP Guber primary in May 2022.
Prof Ikonne was joined by some of Ukwa Ngwa’s most respected elders, including John Nwagborogwu, Hon Nnenna Elendu Ukeje, Rt Hon Cosmos Ndukwe, and others.
InsightnaijaTV reports that the state governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, chose Prof Ikonne as the party’s consensus governorship candidate in a private meeting with the state assembly speaker, Chinedu Orji, and others.
Ikonne is from Agburuike-Nsulu in Isiala Ngwa North, one of Abia Central senatorial district’s three Ngwa LGAs, also known as Umunneato.
Ikonne is an optometry professor.
The state PDP, through its chairman, Asiforo Okere, declared that the guber slot had been allotted to both Abia Central and Abia North in the aftermath of the meeting that annointed Prof Ikonne.
Meanwhile, Enyinnaya Abaribe, the Senate minority leader who represents Abia South, has asked “all Abians desirous of an end to imposition to disregard the purported zoning.”
