Today, Monday, the Federal High Court in Abuja will reopen its session to consider the lawsuit that Edo State Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu filed to stop the state House of Assembly’s attempt to remove him from office.
On March 28, Justice I. E. Ekwo postponed the suit’s defendants’ appearance until April 8 (today), allowing them to provide justification for why Shaibu’s request to halt the impeachment process should not be granted.

On Friday, however, the seven-member impeachment panel led by Justice Omonuwa (retd.) adjourned due to Shaibu’s failure to show up for the panel that was supposed to be investigating his alleged perjury and government secrets leaks.
Shaibu had asked the court to prevent Obaseki, the state assembly speaker and chief judge, from “initiating any impeachment proceedings” against him or “sanctioning any impeachment.”
The court then barred Obaseki, the speaker, and the other suit defendants from initiating the impeachment process against Shaibu; however, the state’s deputy governor, Philip Shaibu, was impeached on Monday morning by the Edo State House of Assembly.
