Some state governments still owe the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) for the 2022 school-based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) enrolled for their children as many state governments are shutting down for a new administration beginning on May 29., 2023.
When queried about the latest about the states that are owing the organisation exam fees for last year, Mr. Patrick Areghan, the chairman of the National Office of WAEC Nigeria, dropped the clue yesterday.

To prevent people from politicising the issue, he said he would not name the states in question or the amount they owe, but he did say several of them still owe the agency a sizable sum of money.
Even after May 29, when some governors wouldn’t return to their seats since the government is continuing, he said WEAC will keep up the conversation with them so that the concerned states can pay their bills.
Areghan stated that even if a governor is taking over a seat for the first time, they will undoubtedly inherit the debts and assets of the previous administration, and WASSCE fees will not be waived. He continued by saying that WAEC as an organisation would not want to embarrass any governor, whether they were in office previously or not.
“So, we are very hopeful that the incoming government in states that are concerned and every other state nationwide will take funding of education more seriously in their respective states,” he stressed.
