The announcement of Tinubu’s victory over his closest rival, PDP candidate Atiku Abubakar, who received 6,984,520 votes, on Saturday, February 25, was made a few hours prior to the presentation.
In a hotly contested race, Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) flagbearer, made his maiden attempt at the presidency. The 70-year-old former Lagos governor won the most votes by winning 12 of Nigeria’s 36 states and securing significant numbers in a number of additional states.
Abubakar, 76, who has already campaigned for president six times, received 6,984,520 votes, while Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP), who in less than a year galvanised youthful voters in a way that some have called unprecedented, came in second with 6,101,533, received 6,101,533 votes.
