Duoye Diri, the governor of Bayelsa State, has urged young people to abstain from election violence and utilise their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to choose trustworthy leaders who can advance economic success, peace, and sustainable development.
The governor made these remarks to youths during a programme at the Ecumenical Center in Igbogene called “Prosperity Youths Day 2023.” He defined the PVC as an instrument that gives the voters political power and said that the card is more powerful than an AK-47 gun.
He stated: “The PVC is your AK-47. You do not need any gun or machete to intimidate anyone. Bayelsa youths are not violent but intelligent and productive.
“Elections are very serious business of choosing leaders that will lead them towards prosperity, development and growth.”

He also emphasised the necessity for young people to participate in the government’s numerous policies and programmes aimed at enhancing their potential. He advised them to abstain from drug use and other forms of violence before, during, and after the elections.
“Do not allow politicians to use you as canon fodders to advance their selfish political interest. They tell you lies and give you peanuts to harass and intimidate other politicians contesting with them.
“Always believe in God and yourselves. Shun drug abuse and cultism. What God has for you, nobody can take it away.”
Additionally, he urged anybody participating in abduction or other illegal activity to reconsider their actions since the government would not tolerate any violation of the state’s peace and stability.
In his remarks, Doubara Kumokou, the leader of the Prosperity Youth Movement, thanked the governor for recognising the importance of empowering young people in the state.
The governor then unveiled two musical records, gave three young people from each of the three senatorial districts a car, he also gave a non-indigenous person a car too.
