Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) nominee for president, has landed in Edo State to begin his campaign ahead of the 2023 general elections despite security fears.
Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State and his deputy governor, Philip Shuaibu, as well as other prominent politicians, PDP officials, and members of the state met Atiku when he arrived at the Benin City Airport with members of the PDP presidential campaign council, including Iyorchia Ayu, the national chairman of the party.
Atiku and his support group paid a visit to the palace of the Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty, Oba Ewuare II (the second), to enlist the monarch’s support for their plans. He asserted that the king has a significant leadership role to play in the nation.
The king responded by assuring Atiku that his palace would be praying.

Despite the state’s security concerns, Atiku travelled to Edo. Gunmen attacked the General Overseer of Omega Fire Ministry, Apostle Johnson Suleiman, on Friday, and six people were slain, including members of the cleric’s security detail.
In a statement on Friday, the Edo State Government claimed to have discovered preparations by some individuals to disrupt the presidential campaign rally.
Osarodion Ogie, the state government’s secretary, said in a statement that the administration will see to it that anyone attempting to disturb the peace in the state was dealt with legally.
