After Karim Benzema of Real Madrid won the 2022 Ballon d’Or, former Arsenal star Mesut Ozil wrote a touching letter to his former colleague and striker.
The Frenchman received the trophy following a season in which he led Los Blancos to significant La Liga and Champions League victories.
Additionally, under Didier Deschamps, Benzema was given an improbable return to the France national team, where he served as the squad’s focal point leading up to the World Cup later this year. Many others congratulated the 34-year-old on earning the accolade on social media, but Ozil’s was especially heartfelt.
“My boy Benzi – the best player in the world,” the playmaker started in his tweet. “I’ve always said you will win this trophy and you deserve it so much. Proud of you my brother.”

While they both rose to superstardom on their own at Real Madrid together, Ozil choose to play for Arsene Wenger at the Emirates Stadium. The former Germany international had some successful seasons in the Premier League, scoring more than 90 goals while making slightly over 180 appearances.
While things ended poorly, he might have had the opportunity to play alongside the player who went by the moniker “Benzi” while he was at Arsenal. The reason for this is that former manager Arsene Wenger said last year that the club tried to sign the striker but were unable to reach an agreement at the time, so they decided to sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang instead.
The Gunners may now be regretting their failure to recruit Benzema, who has remained in the Spanish capital and developed into one of the best players in the world in recent years.
