Nnamdi Kanu‘s legal team, the incarcerated leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, has argued for his release.
Ifeanyi Ejiofor, Kanu’s lead attorney, made the demand in a statement in Abuja on Friday, September 23, 2022. He called for his immediate, unconditional release from the Department of State Services’ custody so that he may see the doctors of his choosing.

Ejiofor said that his client had suffered from stomach aches for 48 days without being able to eat anything.
The defence attorney said that in addition to the DSS medical facility being inadequate to handle Kanu’s medical needs, the security organisation had also barred his client from seeing his preferred doctor.
Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, who has been kept in solitary confinement for more than 14 months, had his normal court-ordered visit done today at the DSS headquarters in Abuja, he stated.
“The purpose of today’s visit was to satisfy our curiosity about the DSS’s compliance with providing Onyendu with the necessary medical care to address his deteriorating health condition.
“Sadly, we made startling discovery that despite the alarm raised on Monday, calling for the intervention of responsible foreign governments and institutions, on the DSS flagrant disobedience to orders of court, particularly in denying Onyendu access to his personal medical doctor and medication, the DSS immediately resorted to a local chemist store to procure substandard drugs to be administered on Onyendu.
“Since it is now obvious that the DSS does not have the facility, capacity and or resources to manage Onyendu’s deteriorating health condition, we are compelled to publicly implore the DSS, to allow us have Onyendu back unconditionally, or better still, allow us to purchase the prescribed drugs for Kanu pending his unconditional release from their custody.’’
