When the social media space began to be inundated with mockery of Senator Kashim Shettima’s dress at the 62nd Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, I knew right deep in me there was something those flock of media trolls were hiding from the public and the only way to succeed at that was to gang up by focusing on someone’s dress at an event whose focus, fundamentally should have been the intellectual capacity and preparedness of the subject for the task ahead.
But as it is, truth and reality could be likened to the Rock of Gibraltar which stands invincible through ages, and could not be hidden or silenced. As such, when eventually, the speeches and discussions Kashim had at the NBA came to people’s domain, the reality of Kashim’s capacity came into open. His facts-induced speech is full of eloquence and clarity which immediately submerged the orchestrated focus on his dress and earned him myriad of admirers pouring merited encomiums on him from every part of the country. In a flash, the truth of Kashim’s capability began to dominate the media spaces signaling the triumph of truth over fallacy and unnecessary mockery.
The essence of inviting the frontline candidates was to offer them the needed platform to address their prospective voters who need to give them the necessary intellectual, moral and proactive assessment needed to measure the quality of their personalities in relation to their quest to take over the mantle of the country’s leadership, and to the unbiased observer who listened to the speeches with a sound and objective mind, no candidate, including Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar delivered a speech that successfully satiated the public with unbridled facts, realities and precise plans as Kashim Shettima did at the event.
Beyond Kashim’s oratorical prowess, Kashim’s speech and responses gave apt answer to why Tinibu’s choice of Kashim Shettima is not only the best for the vice presidential position but even as many have noted, Kashim is a collosal personality endowed with a deep knowledge of the economy, security and the needed ability to work with his principal, Tinibu, to take Nigeria to the promised land.
Kashim Shettima knows politics and for him, the NBA stage was yet another important podium to remind Nigerians about the person of Tinubu, of whom he said: “You have a city boy who has transformed Lagos into a home for all.” Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has established a track record of performance. He has mentored men and women who are excelling in different fields of human endeavours. The world is changing and the trajectory of global growth is aimed at Africa and Nigeria can only make or mar that global vision with her choice of leadership comes 2023.
Kashim is obviously in the full grasps of the challenges confronting Nigeria and he knows that the remedy for the many ills lies in ensuring that the leadership component swings in the right trajectory to meet up with the fast evolving 21st century transformation:
“Once we get the leadership question right every other thing will fall into place. In this age when the others are talking about Artificial Intelligence and nanotechnology and biotechnology, we need a leader, who has the skill set; who has the understanding of the global economy”
As an ardent reader, I believe Kashim Shettima’s encyclopedic love for reading must have given him the obvious edge and presented him as a perfect fit to Tinubu. No wonder the popular saying: readers are leaders. But beyond reading, Kashim Shettima has mastered the politics of good governance and this has clearly made him to stand out and tall, enough to join the City Boy of Lagos, Tinubu, in getting the question of leadership right. As Chinua Achebe notes:
“The trouble with Nigeria is simply and squarely a failure of leadership. There’s nothing basically wrong with the Nigerian character. The Nigerian problem is the unwillingness or inability of its leaders to rise to the responsibility, to the challenge of personal example which are the hallmarks of true leadership.”
Kashim went far to, unlike the other candidates, prove why Nigerians should follow people who know the road. People with astounding track records of good governance instead of people fond of confounding the people with fetid promises and abject incapabilities.
“And we have the antecedents. I built some of the best schools in Nigeria. Go to Borno and see wonders; you will never believe that it is a state in a state of war. So, we are going to replicate our achievements in Lagos, in Borno and some of the frontline states so that our nation will be a better place. The fundamental issue is pure leadership.”
Nigerians are watching and I know for sure, from Kashim’s multi dimensional approach and analysis of the economy and how to go about it, couple with his first hand security experience, and citing Tinubu’s famous economic antecedents, his in-depth knowledge and practical dispensations of facts, prove beyond reasonable doubt as lawyers would say, that the Tinibu and Kashim’s Convoy is the NIGERIAN project.
