On Tuesday, August 23, 2022, Senator Andy Uba’s vehicles were confiscated at his Abuja home by members of the Nigeria Police Force and the Execution Unit of the Federal Capital Territory High Court due to a N50 million debt stemming from a loan he received from Oranto Petroleum Limited.
The debtor in a case brought by Oranto Petroleum against Uba is the former three-day governor of Anambra State and candidate for governor of the All Progressive Congress in the just-concluded elections in Anambra.
The confiscation of Uba’s property followed the Anambra State High Court’s ruling in a case heard by Justice Mbonu Nwenyi of the Aguata Judicial Division Ekwulobia, which was rendered on March 6, 2017.
Nigerian multimillionaire Arthur Eze is the owner of the Pan-African oil exploration and production corporation known as Oranto Petroleum.
The confiscated Jeep cars were kept at Uba’s home at 49 T.Y. Danjuma Street, Asokoro, Abuja.
The judge determined that Uba, the case’s defendant, had not denied accepting the plaintiff’s friendly interest-free loan.
The court additionally determined that after reading the defendant’s statement of defence, there was no good defence that had been provided, and that the plaintiff was therefore entitled to the judgement.
According to Justice Mbonu, “The Plaintiff has properly established that she granted the defendant an interest-free loan that was not rejected and has not since been repaid.
In light of the circumstances, I grant judgement in favour of the plaintiff in the amount of N50 million, which represents the repayment of an interest-free loan given to the defendant by the plaintiff at the latter’s request.
The plaintiff was represented by Mrs. Ugochi Obajekwe, who used Chief Tugbe Ike’s brief, while the defendant was represented by G.N. Onovo, who used Chima Oguejiofor’s brief.
