Aisha Yesufu, a leading social critic and activist in Nigeria, has stated that it is up to the Nigerian people to replace the ineffective political class with capable leaders.
Yesufu stated in a series of tweets that Nigerians cannot keep electing the same candidates and expect a different outcome. Her verified Twitter handle is @AishaYesufu.
She used the example of education, where ASUU has been on strike for six months, to argue that Nigerians cannot keep electing the same candidates and expecting a different outcome.
She stated that there was an ASUU strike before the 2019 elections. ASUU is on strike ahead of the 2023 elections. You cannot keep electing the same candidates and anticipate a different outcome.
Referencing a film she produced a year prior titled “the future project: young and emerging leaders,” Yesufu encouraged Nigerians not to believe anyone who told them they couldn’t help their candidate win.
I made this video a year ago, she continued. At the time, it seemed virtually inconceivable that what is happening now would occur. Thank goodness Nigerians are using the hashtag #EnoughisEnough.
She further counselled Nigerians to reject ineffective leaders in favour of those with competence and capacity.
She also said that it was up to us Nigerians to get rid of the political elite that had failed and elect leaders based on their qualifications for office, including their competence, character, capacity, and compassion. Nigeria is worth standing up for and worth fighting for.
