Last week, some senators in the 9th Senate staged a walkout to voice their displeasure with the nation’s security situation.
The lawmakers gave President Muhammadu Buhari a six-week deadline to resolve the security problem because they disapproved of the Senate President Ahmad Lawan’s decision to prevent them from debating the urgent matter.
At the conclusion of the ultimatum, the MPs threatened to impeach the president if he did not improve the nation’s security situation.
Adamu Bulkachuwa, a senator from Bauchi North, observed that the majority of senators supported the impeachment motion against President Buhari in his Monday speech on the subject.
In a meeting held behind closed doors on Wednesday, the leader of the All Progressives Congress declared that practically all senators back the effort to impeach the president.
In an interview with Channels TV on Monday, Bulkachuwa claimed that prior attempts by lawmakers to resolve the nation’s security issues had failed.
The lawmaker while sharing the detail of the closed-door session said, “In the first instance, on that day, the Senate went into a closed session and it was at the closed session that these issues were discussed. Without divulging so much, I can tell you that majority of senators felt there was a need to initiate that action.
“It was not 100% unanimous per se but the majority supported it. And this didn’t come out to public knowledge because it was during a closed session. And (as) you know, closed sessions or executive sessions, there are no journalists, not even (members of) staff of the Assembly. It is purely a meeting of lawmakers – senators that are present on that day.”
