Adamu Adamu, the minister of education, has been given a two-week deadline by President Muhammadu Buhari to settle the problems causing the Academic Staff Union of Universities’ ongoing five-month strike (ASUU).
Since February 14 of this year, ASUU has been on strike to pressure the government into granting a variety of requests.
Following briefings from the agencies, ministries, and departments of government involved in the dispute with the university unions that were on strike, President Buhari issued the ultimatum on Tuesday.
Additionally, he mandated that Chris Ngige, the minister of labor and employment, attend any further meetings held to address the situation.
Mallam Adamu, the minister of education, Dr. Zainab Ahmed, the minister of finance, budget, and national planning, Senator Ngige, the minister of labor and employment, and Isa Pantami, the minister of communications and digital economy, were all present at the meeting.
Dr. Folashade Yemi-Esan, the Director-General of the Budget Office, Ben Akabueze, and Ekpo Nta, the Chairman of the National Salaries Income and Wages Commission, were among the other representatives present at the meeting.
The 2009 FG-ASUU agreement must be renegotiated, the payment of earned academic allowances, funds for the revitalization of public universities, the payment of salary arrears, improved working conditions, payment of promotion arrears, and inadequate funding of state universities are just a few of the demands made by ASUU.
The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists are among the university unions that are now on strike in addition to ASUU (NAAT).
On June 22, SSANU and NASU declared a two-month extension of their strike, adding that it will terminate whenever the Federal Government complied with members’ requests.
