On Wednesday, a Nigerian court in Osogbo ordered the police to pay Yusuf Adepoju and Muddathir Kewdirorun six million naira as restitution for breaking into their homes without permission.
The petitioners claimed that on November 16, 2021, at 3:00 am, security personnel broke into their residences without cause.
Justice A. Oyebiyi, the presiding court, ruled on the fundamental human rights violation lawsuit and stated that the applicants had proven their case against the police beyond a reasonable doubt.
The judge ruled that it was against the 1999 Constitution as amended to violate the fundamental rights of unarmed individuals.
Oyebiyi stated that the police’s unannounced raid at late hours of the night jeopardized the men’s and their families’ privacy.
Therefore, the court ordered the police to pay the amount to the two applicants as compensation for violating their fundamental rights.
