The Nigeria Police Force’s Lagos State Command has reported the arrest of 50 criminal suspects in the state’s Ikorodu district, as it continues to enforce the ban on commercial motorbikes.
InsightnaijaTV reports that the Lagos government, has banned commercial motorbikes, often known as “okadas,” from operating on highways and in six local government districts.
Apapa, Eti Osa, Ikeja, Lagos Island, Surulere, and Lagos Mainland are among the council districts affected.
Benjamin Hundeyin, the command’s spokesman, told journalists on Saturday that operatives of the command were attacked in Ikorodu on Friday night while doing their authorised responsibilities.
Hundeyin claimed that the agents were confronted by hoodlums and riders who attempted to prevent them from carrying out a raid in the region after getting information regarding nighttime motorcycle operations.
“We reviewed our strategy and stormed Ikorodu last night (existing ban on all highways).
“The riders and hoodlums attacked the police. We activated our standby backup. 50 arrested, 14 motorcycles impounded,” he said.
According to a representative for the command, the seized motorcycles will be crushed next.
