Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and the world’s richest man, has stated that he does not own a home.
Musk made the admission during a recent video interview in response to comments about the criticism billionaires face as a result of their wealth.
“I don’t even own a place right now, I’m literally staying at friends’ places.
“If I travel to the Bay Area, which is where most of Tesla’s engineering is, I basically rotate through friends’ spare bedrooms,” he said.
Musk acknowledged that his fortune was enormous, but he also acknowledged that it would be problematic if he spent disproportionately on personal luxuries, which he did not.
“For sure, it would be very problematic if I was spending billions of dollars a year in personal consumption, but that is not the case,” he said.
The millionaire stated that he does not own a yacht and does not take holidays, although he does own a private plane.
“It’s not as though my personal consumption is high. I mean, the one exception is the plane, but if I don’t use the plane then I have less hours to work,” he explained.
Over the years, his friends and associates have noted his economical ways.
Musk’s current partner, Grimes, said in an interview with Vanity Fair last month that he doesn’t live like a millionaire at all.
“(Musk) does not live like a billionaire. He lives at times below the poverty line. To the point where I was like, can we not live in a very insecure $40,000 house? Where the neighbors, like, film us, and there’s no security, and I’m eating peanut butter for eight days in a row?” she said.
Grimes, a musician and mother to Musk’s two youngest children, told of a time when he refused to replace a mattress that had a hole in it when her side was damaged.
When she brought it up, he offered they swap his mattress for the one she had.
In 2015, Larry Page, a co-founder of Google, stated Musk used to invite him to stay at his apartment while he was in town.
“He’ll e-mail and say, ‘I don’t know where to stay tonight. Can I come over?’” Page said.
Musk is currently attempting to purchase Twitter in its entirety and turn it into a private firm.
According to InsightnaijaTV, he offered to buy the company for $41 billion at $54.20 a share, which the company’s board of directors is attempting to thwart with a “poison pill” strategy.
Musk said in another interview that he has a backup plan in case Twitter rejects his offer.
Musk acknowledged that he might not be able to buy the company outright, but stated he could “technically afford it.”
“I have sufficient assets,” he responded, without providing any other information.
