Gunmen Set Police Station Ablaze In Anambra

Unknown gunmen assaulted and burned down Amichi Police Station in Anambra state’s Nnewi South Local Government Area on Friday evening.

This comes just 24 hours after gunmen burned down the Nnewi South LGA Headquarters on Thursday.

Residents and people across the state have been shaken by the recent attack on a police station in the area.

When the attackers struck, there were no police officers present in the building.

When contacted, DSP Toochukwu Ikenga, the state command’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), stated that there were no police officers on duty at the time of the event.

When the gunmen stormed the area again, he said the station was being renovated through community efforts.

According to the command, the attackers damaged what the community had rebuilt after the building had been destroyed previously.

The majority of people are claimed to be perplexed by state Governor Prof. Charles Soludo’s handling of members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The governor vowed to commence discussion with IPOB and other agitators during his inauguration on March 17 this year, with the goal of bringing enduring peace and development to the state, a move that IPOB members applauded and backed the state government.

However, soon after the swearing-in ceremony, the APGA directed all market leaders, transporters, and others to resume normal operations.

Members of the prohibited entity claim that the directive has harmed them, particularly the state government’s actions taken without the much-anticipated debate.

On Thursday, gunmen set fire to the Nnewi South local government district.

During the Gunmen’s attack on the council secretariat, a security guard was slain.

Governor Chukwuma Soludo had directed security officers in the state to find those responsible for the heinous crime.

Soludo ordered the security agencies to make sure the attackers did not get away with their crimes.

Soludo, who was accompanied by the state’s Commissioner of Police, CP Echeng Echeng, to the location of the tragedy, advised the people of the state not to be discouraged by the development, assuring them that his government is capable of handling the situation.

He called the security guard’s assassination and arson “mindless and very unfortunate.”

The governor stated that it was ungodly for anyone to take another’s life.

The destruction of vital facilities within the local government, such as the education office and Works department, as well as the traditional ruler’s building complex, according to Soludo, was a huge economic waste.

He criticized the fact that the cash intended for their reconstruction would have been better spent on other important infrastructure.

The Amichi and other Police Stations were among the stations attacked during the 2020 EndSARS demonstration, according to Ikenga, who also stated that no one was injured and that a team of police personnel had been dispatched to the area to maintain calm.

According to him, the hoodlums attacked not only the Nnewiechi police station but also the police stations in Osumoghu and Ezenifite.

He stated the police state stations were being rebuilt because they were among the stations hit by the EndSARS outbreak.

According to him, following the ENDSARS saga, all state police officers were transferred to area command, where there were no officers.

“After the ends incident, the communities started reconstruction of those stations and they have not finished them.

By the time of the attack, there were no policemen there. I wondered why somebody would attack them ” he said normalcy had been restored and urged residents in the area with useful information to make them available to the police to enable the command to deal with those responsible for the insecurity in the area.”
