In the last week, almost 7,000 Boko Haram/Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists have surrendered to the Nigerian Army.
In an interview in Maiduguri on Wednesday, Maj.- Gen. Christopher Musa, Theartre Commander, Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) ‘cooperation’ in the North East Joint Operation, revealed this.
The military offensive against the ISWAP and Boko Haram terrorists in the North East Region, according to Musa, has continued to yield major results.
He said: “This is evident as thousands of the insurgents comprising of combatants, non combatants, foot soldiers alongside their families, continued to lay down their arms in different parts of Borno to accept peace.”
The Nigerian army and other stakeholders are expected to meticulously profile the surrendered terrorists and their families before they undergo rehabilitation programs, according to Musa.
The Nigerian Military and other security agencies, according to the Theatre Commander, would continue to create and implement efficient measures to put an end to Boko Haram terrorism.
In the previous nine months, authorities believe 30,000 terrorists and their families have surrendered to the Nigerian military.
On April 30, 2021, the OPHK was launched.
The army has renamed its operation against Boko Haram, which was previously known as Lafiya Dole, to Hadin Kai.
This is the operation’s third moniker since its inception.
Tukur Buratai, the former army chief, renamed the operation from Zaman Lafiya to Lafiya Dole in 2015, claiming that the shift showed his intention to achieve peace in the north-east by force. (NAN)
