Joseph Egbunike, the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) in command of the Force Criminal Investigations Department, has died.
Egbunike reportedly slumped and died at his Abuja office in the late hours of Tuesday, InsightnaijaTV reports.
He was transported to Abuja’s national hospital, where he subsequently passed away.
An official told Gazette that police officers have assembled at his official apartment in Maitama in preparation for his funeral.
“It is very tragic that he died after battling a protracted ailment that left his neck swollen for many years,” a police source said. “He was previously flown to London for treatment, but he did not recover well before returning to work.”
Egbunike, who is from Onitsha in Anambra State, led the Special Investigation Panel set up by the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, to look into the money laundering charges levelled against Abba Kyari, the suspended chief of the Police Intelligence Response Team.
According to reports, the Egbunike-led panel sought to ensure that the embattled Abba Kyari had a smooth landing.
Instead of dismissing Kyari, the late cop advised that he be demoted.
Egbunike had been the head of the police finPolice DIG Who Probed Abba Kyari, Egbunike Slumps, Diesance department for some years until being appointed DIG in late 2020.
