Goodluck Jonathan’s candidacy is a smart one with Mai Buni, in that both aspirants are quite young and may appeal to the populace but the crux of the gang up here is that GEJ can not be accepted to spend only one term for the South and then give it to Mai Buni who represents the North.
Intriguingly, Osigwe Omo-Ikirodah writes in from Abuja on 2023 presidential primaries and polls: “They say when two elephants fight the grass suffers, but in reality not only does the grass suffers the land as well as the elephants themselves mourns.
He continued, “Have you ever wondered how the injury would be when two elephants fight against themselves? I have mean dogs and when they fight my whole household gets affected and terrified as well, we can’t sleep and it is indeed dreadful.
The fight of gladiators may consume the spectators at the arena if not carefully handled, this is called a spillover effect.
Intriguing times lies ahead as the APC is set for a titanic battle that may consume the soul of the party and bring to shreds any meaningful gain attained by the party in the past seven years of its administration.
The crux of the warfare is the national chairmanship position and the presidential ticket of the party which would both take place this same year.
Funny enough the planned convention may not even hold as there is a fifth columnist that prefers only one convention taking place which would be the presidential convention or in the worst-case scenario both would be held on the same day.
They have their valid reasons too as I am wondering how the APC which is evident finds it difficult, I mean extremely demanding to put their house in order as regards a common National Congress for the NEC of their party to emerge would be able to organise a presidential convention under such a close gap.
Herein lies the problem, Mai Buni’s alleged interest in running for the vice-presidency under a Goodluck Ebele Jonathan’s presidential ticket.
According to words on the streets, this is what has led to the serial postponement of the national congress for close to two years now since the Adams Oshiomole’s led NEC was booted out clandestinely.
Goodluck Jonathan’s candidacy is a smart one with Mai Buni, in that both aspirants are quite young and may appeal to the populace but the crux of the gang up here is that GEJ can not be accepted to spend only one term for the South and then give it to Mai Buni who represents the North.
GEJ’s first tenure was actually a disaster for the South as his presidency favoured the North with an unprecedented development channelled to the progress of the North at the detriment of even his own Bayelsa State.
It is on record that the road to his hometown was constructed by President Buhari’s administration despite serving 6 years as Commander-in-Chief, quite shameful I must confess.
Katsina State which happens to be Buhari’s base has all the basic infrastructures you can mention, from defence to educational institutions etc, all courtesy of Buhari.
Mai Mala Buni on his own is young and very ambitious but his covert moves to grab power is very unpleasant to the traditional power brokers who see it as an affront to their continuous hold on to power.
Mai Buni’s secret plan with Ex-President Goodluck Jonathan may have hit the rocks as there is a high level of red alert placed on this outlandish pair.
Currently shaking the party to its foundation is the current conspiracy theory of former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi for President and the Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai serving as his Vice.
Amaechi from history is seen as a spoiler, a kind of betrayal who sold out his kinsmen for a lesser deal.
In what can be described as the proverbial “Selling (one’s) birthright for a mess of pottage…
“To trade something of remarkable, critical, or fundamental fee for some financial benefit that proves to be of little, trivial, or no price but which seems to be appealing or treasured on first reckoning”
Amaechi sacrificed the slot of the South-south underneath Goodluck Jonathan’s headship for his personal ministerial appointment. How this has impacted the Niger Delta nation is a topic for another day.
Please do observe that Amaechi’s candidacy is another desirable sell for the South-south in that the minister of transportation is entitled to an entire two terms, in contrast to Jonathan’s candidacy which is entitled to only a single term.
Amaechi is ruthless when it comes to fighting dirty and scores the “first grade” in muddy politics.
The Kaduna State governor on the other hand is seen as the face of the new Northern power brokers after the likes of IBB and General Abdulsalami whose influences have dwindled and are now limited to just Niger state.
El-Rufai is famed to have unfettered access to Buhari and is seen as a core northern product that would protect their interest to the end without compromising his Islamic faith. El-Rufai is considered a fanatic and looks like one who can be trusted by the core Northern apparatchik.
The Amaechi El-Rufai combination is causing heavy ripples in the APC as party members are angry about the way and manner the pair is expected to execute their plans.
El-Rufai is accused of drafting in 76-years-old ex-Governor of Nassarwa State, Senator Adamu Abdullahi to become the next APC national chairman and allegedly using his influence with his access to the President to twist the hands of Buhari.
Already speculations are awash that the President has already endorsed Abdullahi on the prompt of El-Rufai.
A piece of news circulating on Whatsapp platforms and other internet sources claims there are documents that have been signed by Buhari affirming Abdullahi as the next party chairman.
A part of the circulating article reads” Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai has been named as the person who pressured President Buhari to sign the documents after successfully arguing the need to ensure the Fulani continue to have a hold on power via proxies.
Multiple sources further revealed that the Kaduna State governor strategically leaked the documents with the President’s signature to cement his reputation as the ultimate power broker in the ongoing battle for control of APC.”
In giving credence to the above statements flying around about El-Rufai’s alleged insistence, Senator Abdullahi has vehemently spoken against a Southern Presidency and has vowed the North would kick against it by means necessary.
For Africa, we dey talk am say Dem no dey beat pikin come tell am say make e no cry, who ready beat pikin go ready for the pikin tears.
Since the APC has decided to bring some weird permutations into the whole game stakeholders are ready to rock the boat and fight for their prerogatives.
In Proverbs 20 vs 3, the Bible says “Keeping away from strife is an honour for a man, But any fool will quarrel.”
The Tag team of Goodluck Jonathan and Mai Buni on one hand and the other pair of Rotimi Ameachi and El-Rufai at the other end would take us into a Royal Rumble battle, they are perceived to have cornered the party and it may seem they are having their way, an African proverb says that “The person who is cornered will fight”
APC stakeholders have declared both undercover plans of the two contending camps as DEAD ON ARRIVAL.
” One cannot part two fighting bulls, let them tear themselves apart then we shall let them know that we are battle-ready to truncate any of the permutations from these two camps that are engrossed in their parochial and selfish interest to the detriment of the millions of APC members worldwide. It is dead on arrival ” An Unnamed APC top party chieftain.
Another top party chieftain had this to say”The biggest casualties of the 2023 election will be the Sponsored Speculators whose basic philosophies are betrayal, ingratitude & biting the fingers that fed them! we are watching”
Yesterday Al-Makura ran to the Chairman of the South West Governors forum, which happens to be Akeredolu to complain about the gang up against the forthcoming APC national convention.
The governor’s response to Al-Makura said it all…
“Even if we are going to have consensus, it is consensus and not ‘one person CENSUS, so if we must have consensus then it must be consensus, and that is my own approach.” Akeredolu to Al-Makura.
The gladiators are ready to fight dirty and it would come with great implications, Nigerians unfortunately would be the ones to bear the brunt.
The combat ahead is clearly going to be mucky, rough and bewitching. How the APC is set to wriggle out of all these complexities and come out unscathed is left to be seen.
