President Muhammadu Buhari is slated to leave Abuja on Tuesday for Nairobi, Kenya, to attend the 50th Anniversary of the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP@50), which will take place on the 3rd and 4th of March 2022 in Nairobi.
He will travel to the United Kingdom for a two-week standard medical check-up after the East African event.
His visit to Nairobi comes in response to an invitation from Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta.
According to a statement made by Femi Adesina, Special Adviser to the President (Media & Publicity), the Special Session’s topic is “Strengthening UNEP For The Implementation Of The Environmental Dimension Of The 2030 Agenda For Sustainable Development.”
“For 50 years, UNEP has coordinated a worldwide effort with Member States to address the world’s biggest environmental challenges,” the statement said, citing the event’s organizers. Member States play an important role in developing UNEP policy, implementing UNEP programs, and advocating for solutions to our common environmental problems.
“UNEP@50 is a time to reflect on the past and envision the future. It provides an opportunity to reinvigorate international cooperation and spur collective action to address the triple planetary crisis of climate change, nature and biodiversity loss, and pollution and waste. No country or continent can solve these global crises alone. But each nation has a crucial role to play in protecting our people and planet.”
At the event, President Buhari is set to deliver the country’s National Statement and take part in High Level Dialogue Sessions on the Environment, according to the statement.
He will be accompanied by Geoffrey Onyeama, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sharon Ikeazor, National Security Adviser Maj.Gen Babagana Monguno (rtd), Director General, National Intelligence Agency, Amb. Ahmed Rufai Abubakar, and Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chief Executive Officer of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission.
President Buhari will go to London for normal medical exams, which would last no more than two weeks, according to the statement.
