The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced fresh general election dates for Nigeria in 2023.
Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the INEC Chairman, who announced the move during a news conference in Abuja on Saturday, said the revised dates were essential as a result of President Muhammadu Buhari’s recent signing of the 2022 amended election act.
According to InsightnaijaTV, the Presidential and National Assembly elections will now take place on Saturday, February 25, 2023, rather than the previously planned February 18 date.
On March 11, 2023, gubernatorial and state house of assembly elections will also be held.
Political parties must hold primary elections and resolve any disputes that arise between Monday, April 4th, 2022, and Friday, June 3rd, 2022, according to INEC.
Parties must submit nomination papers for presidential and national assembly candidates between the 10th and 17th of June 2022, while gubernatorial and state assembly candidates must do so between the 1st and 15th of July 2022.
The electoral umpire also declared that political parties will begin campaigning for presidential and national assembly elections on Wednesday, September 28, 2022, while gubernatorial and state assembly elections will begin on Wednesday, October 12, 2022.
The deadline for presidential and national assembly election campaigns is midnight on Thursday, February 23, 2023, while the deadline for gubernatorial and state assembly election campaigns is midnight on Thursday, March 9, 2023.
