On Thursday, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang described joining Barcelona as “the opportunity of a lifetime” and backed the club to reclaim its place among Europe’s elite.
Aubameyang was officially unveiled at Camp Nou after his signing was completed on Wednesday, the 32-year-old allowed to leave on a free transfer after Arsenal terminated his contract.
His contract with Barcelona runs until 2025, with a break clause in June 2023 and a buy-out clause set at 100 million euros.
“I have always dreamt of playing in La Liga,” Aubameyang said.
“It’s an incredible opportunity for me, it’s been a dream since I was little and it’s the opportunity of my life. Barca is one of the best clubs in the world and I am very happy to be here.”
Barcelona will be hoping that Aubameyang can help solve the team’s scoring problems this season and help them finish in the top four of La Liga.
Barca are no longer the force they once were, plagued by debts of more than a billion euros and still reeling from the shock departure of Lionel Messi.
They were eliminated from the Champions League in the group stage this season and currently sit fifth in La Liga, 15 points behind leaders Real Madrid.
“I know that we will return to the top, little by little,” Aubameyang said.
Aubameyang could make his Camp Nou debut on Sunday against Atletico Madrid, who are a point ahead of Barcelona in fourth place.
However, the striker is likely to be clumsy. On December 6, he made his last appearance for Arsenal against Everton.
“I haven’t played a game in a long time, but in my head it is very clear that I am ready to play and to help,” said Aubameyang.
“I’ve talked a bit with the boss and he sees me as a number nine but if he ever needs me to play on the wing, I’m ready to play there too.”
After a series of disciplinary concerns, Aubameyang lost out with Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta, scoring 92 goals in 165 games.
“I don’t think I did anything wrong,” Aubameyang said. “I think (the problem) was just with him. He wasn’t happy. I was calm and that’s it.”
Howdy just wanted to give you a quick heads up. The text in your content seem to be running off the screen in Safari. I’m not sure if this is a format issue or something to do with web browser compatibility but I thought I’d post to let you know. The style and design look great though! Hope you get the problem resolved soon. Cheers
I’m impressed, I must say. Rarely do I encounter a blog that’s both educative and interesting, and let me tell you, you have hit the nail on the head. The issue is something which not enough folks are speaking intelligently about. I’m very happy that I found this in my search for something concerning this.
