Following the evaluation of the ‘No Vehicle Inspection, No Road Worthiness Certificate’ Policy, which went into effect in January 2022, the Lagos State Government implemented a Booking System to alleviate the surge seen at some vehicle inspection centers.
The Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Frederic Oladeinde, explained the amendment made to the procedure for receiving a Roadworthiness Certificate in the State, stating that the vehicle inspection will now be based on scheduled appointments.
He also revealed that the inspection period has been extended from 30 days to 60 days in order to reduce the current panic in some inspection test centers, and that the backlog of previously referred vehicles will be cleared between now and February 14 to make room for the Booking System.
Oladeinde also stated that the policy, which was implemented to crack down on rickety vehicles that are responsible for incessant accidents, loss of lives, and property within the city, is also aimed at addressing traffic congestion caused by several vehicle breakdowns due to the old process, which is no longer sustainable.
The Transport Commissioner stated that public transportation owners are not being left behind in the new policy regime, as some have already had their vehicles checked. Vehicle Inspection Officers are also engaging other commercial drivers for vehicle checks at various motor parks in order to reduce vehicle convergence at inspection test centers.
He also indicated that the State Government is intensifying consultations with commercial partners with vehicle inspection facilities in order to expand the state’s current 27 vehicle inspection centers, with five more mobile test centers on the way.
The Commissioner praised motorists who submitted to inspections at the Lagos State Computerised Centres across the state, noting that 15,998 of the 26,442 vehicles inspected in January passed, while 10,444 failed the minimum safety standard tests, adding that some of the failed vehicles have reported for retests while others are awaiting others.
While urging citizens of the state, particularly motorists, to completely cooperate with the new policy in order to improve traffic flow and safety, the Transport Commissioner stressed that building a multi-modal megacity requires a seamless transportation system.
