President Muhammadu Buhari has stated that he is unconcerned with who will succeed him as president of Nigeria when he steps down in 2023.
Buhari said this in an interview with Channels Television on Wednesday evening, adding that if he talked about his successor, he may be eliminated.
Buhari believes that his legacy and record are more important to him than who will be in charge of the Aso Presidential Villa after his second term ends in May next year.
When asked what comes to mind when he thinks of 2023, he replied, “I’m not interested. It is not my problem. It is not my interest. I cannot say who succeeds me or talk about it. I may be eliminated if I mention it. I think it’s better I keep quiet.”
According to reports, officials in Buhari’s administration indicated that the president wants to help former President Goodluck Jonathan’s bid for re-election in 2023.
This comes as Bola Tinubu, the APC’s National Leader and former Lagos State governor, and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, the APC’s Vice President, are both rumored to be interested in succeeding Buhari next year.
Buhari also stated in the interview that the bandits terrorizing the North West had been labeled terrorists and would be dealt with accordingly.
A Federal High Court in Abuja ruled all bandit groups’ operations in the country to constitute acts of terrorism on November 25, 2021.
President Buhari gave consent for Mohammed Abubakar, the director of public prosecution (DPP) of the Federal Ministry of Justice, to file the move ex-parte, with the goal of proscription of the Yan Bindiga and Yan Ta’adda groups, as well as other terrorist organisations in the country.
Security reports confirmed that the bandit groups were responsible for the killings, abductions, rapes, kidnappings, and other acts of criminality in the north-east, north-central, and other sections of the country, according to the Nigerian government’s supporting affidavits.
Speaking during an interview with Channels TV, Buhari said he has asked the security agencies to go after them.
