Some women stopped the gate of Dowen College in the Lekki region of Lagos State today to protest the murder of 12-year-old Sylvester Oromoni at the school.
Recall that the late student was allegedly assaulted by “several of his senior colleagues” for refusing to join a cult.
Perrison Oromoni, his cousin, has gone on social media to describe how he died, even going so far as to name his cousin’s alleged assassins.
According to Perrison, the school notified the deceased’s father that his son had been injured while playing football at the school.
Over 100,000 people have also signed a petition on the Change.org platform calling for the arrest and prompt prosecution of individuals implicated in the tragedy.
Some demonstrators were seen in front of Dowen College in a video broadcast by BBC Pidgin on Wednesday, asking that the school officials be held accountable for failing to safeguard the deceased.
They also encouraged security services to investigate the incident as soon as possible and bring the offenders to justice.
Sources added that if the demonstrators do not stop, police agents who were seen in huge numbers threatened to arrest them.
The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, reacted to Oromoni’s death on Tuesday.
The governor described the incident as “disturbing and distressing” in a Facebook post on Tuesday.
He also reassured the relatives of the deceased that his administration was committed to seeing that justice was delivered in the case.
“I commiserate deeply with the family of late Sylvester (Jnr) Oromoni, the 12-year old pupil of Dowen College, Lagos,” he wrote.
“As a parent, I share the grief Sylvester’s demise has brought upon his parents and the entire household. The incident is not only sad but disturbing and heartbreaking.
“Consequently, I have ordered a comprehensive investigation into the matter. But while that is going on, I would like to give Sylvester’s parents and the entire citizenry of Lagos, the assurance of my full support at this trying time.
“I share their pains and sense of loss. Indeed, words are inadequate to describe my feelings, but I pray that God Almighty will soothe their pains, and grant Sylvester Jnr eternal rest.”
