Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-olu, the Executive Governor of Lagos State, was represented by Mr. Rotimi Tinubu, the Director, Post-Service, Lagos State Pension Commission, who urged the pensioners in Bariga LCDA to prepare adequately for life after retirement in order to ensure their future.
In his remarks at the council secretariat, Mr. Tinubu, who is also a representative of the Head of Service and Local Government Service Commission, counseled the retirees on how to be frugal with their money as they embark on their retirement travels. He went on to congratulate them and urge them to avoid dubious ideas and businesses that may not be profitable in the long run.
‘This is not to imply that you shouldn’t run little businesses before retirement; for example, if you had a shop where you sold groceries or provided some services before retirement, keep doing so, but refrain from any money-doubling means such as the infamous ‘MMM’ since this is not safe,’ he says.
He also mentioned how important their health is to them. The retirees were advised by the director to consume a variety of fruits and vegetables along with healthful meals. ‘Eating three square meals a day may no longer be necessary, because a single meal with a healthy and balanced combination is preferable than three meals a day with no health benefit,’ he said. You should also make sure you get enough tea and unsweetened biscuits to keep you going. Make sure you don’t eat anything after 7 p.m.’
Tinubu suggested workouts to senior persons as they go about their lives after pen down because according to him, “your body is used to getting up early, your system may need time to adjust, so do workouts when you wake up in the morning, even if it’s just climbing the stairs or taking a walk around your block, anything to stimulate your organs and keep you healthy is crucial,” he said. He also honored the retired citizens with a certificate of honor for their service to the State of Lagos.
Similarly, the Executive Chairman, Hon. Alabi Kolade David, was represented by the Vice Chairman, Hon. Zainat Kuponiyi, who presented the retirees with gifts and Awards of Appreciation. She went on to say that the Chairman congratulates the senior citizens and wishes them a happy retirement. The honorable said they will all be missed in service since they have made significant contributions to the Council’s and Lagos State’s growth. She also expressed gratitude to the employees, the NULGE committee, and everyone else who contributed to the success of the event.
Dr. Oyewole Jumoke, the Medical Officer of Health and the keynote speaker for the NULGE wellness and health campaign, emphasized the importance of being healthy and fit. Health, according to her, is a state of physical, mental, and emotional well-being. ‘It is God’s purpose for us to have healthy lives, so eat decent meals, drink enough of water, limit salt and sugar intake, and sleep for at least 6 hours, because all of these things contribute greatly to your health,’ she says.
Madam Tolulope Clara, speaking on behalf of the pensioners, expressed her gratitude to the Management staff and members of the council for making the event a joyous occasion for her and the other seniors.
