The Lagos State Building Control Agency has cleared Obalende in the Ikoyi/Victoria Island Local Council Development Area of the state of unlawful, haphazard, and non-conforming structures.
This was revealed in a statement headlined ‘LASBCA eliminates unlawful constructions in Obalende’ on Wednesday.
The exercise was carried out, according to the statement, in order to rid the state of the state’s constant building collapses.
An abandoned two-story building collapsed outside Haruna Bus Stop in the Ikorodu district of the state two days ago, killing a local.
Gbolahan Oki, the General Manager of LASBCA, indicated at the demolition exercise on Wednesday that the structures were demolished to restore sanity to Obalende and to prevent collapse, which might result in the loss of life and precious property of the citizens.
Oki claimed that after repeated meetings with developers who promised to make changes, nothing was done, leaving the Agency with no choice but to demolish the structures, which were built in violation of state construction standards and laws.
“The Government will not leave any stone unturned when it comes to building control regulations in the State, as contraveners of the State Building Laws will face the full wrath of the Law, to serve as a detriment to others that plan to engage in similar acts in future,” the statement quoted Oki as saying.
