According to the reports, Facebook is planning to rename its firm, starting with a name change as soon as next week.
The shift is meant to symbolize the company’s desire to be renowned for more than just being a social media behemoth.
Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s CEO, is expected to make the announcement during the company’s annual ‘Connect Conference’ on Thursday, October 28th.
The renaming would most likely present the Facebook app as one of many products managed by a parent corporation that also oversees Instagram, WhatsApp, Oculus, and other companies. According to reports, a Facebook spokeswoman declined to comment for this article.
In July, Zuckerberg stated that “we will effectively transition from people seeing us as primarily a social media company to being a metaverse company” over the next several years.
Facebook now employs over 10,000 people working on consumer devices such as augmented reality glasses, which Zuckerberg hopes will one day be as ubiquitous as smartphones.
Facebook isn’t the only well-known software firm to change its name as its goals broaden. Google reorganized totally under the Alphabet parent company in 2015, partly to signal that it was no longer just a search engine, but a global conglomerate with companies developing self-driving cars and health-care technology.
Snapchat also rebranded to Snap Inc. in 2016, the same year it started calling itself a “camera company” and debuted its first pair of Spectacles camera glasses.
