Pedri, a midfielder from Spain, has extended his contract with FC Barcelona until 2026.
The 18-year-old had less than a year left on his previous contract, however the club had the option to extend it for another two seasons.
Nonetheless, they have decided to go ahead and sign him to whole new terms, with the excellent midfielder committing himself to the Catalans for an even longer period of time.
“FC Barcelona and the player Pedro ‘Pedri’ Gonzalez have reached an agreement to renew his contract until June 30, 2026,” according to a Barca statement.
“The termination clause is set at one billion euros (1.15 billion dollars).”
Pedri has risen quickly after joining Barcelona from Las Palmas last year, establishing himself as a crucial player after being bought for the Blaugrana’s B team at first.
After impressing Ronald Koeman in his first pre-season, he was promoted to the main squad.
Last season, Koeman played Pedri in 37 top-flight games, with only Frenkie de Jong appearing in as many for the Catalan side.
Because of Pedri’s agile stature and passing talent, many have drawn parallels between him and Barcelona legend Andres Iniesta.
The young playmaker has also demonstrated his talent on the international stage, shining for Spain at Euro 2020 and going on to earn a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics.
Pedri became only the second European player aged 18 or younger to start as many as five matches in a major tournament at Euro 2020.
With his last-16 debut against Croatia, he became the European Championship’s youngest player to ever start a knockout game.
Barca will be looking for more now that they have secured one of their major assets.
This will be accomplished by reaching new long-term agreements with players such as Ansu Fati, Gavi, and Ronald Araujo, as they look to the future in the midst of a rebuild.
