The Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, on Tuesday, July 20, 2021 has reacted to the reported arrest of Oduduwa Republic agitator, Chief Sunday Adeyemo also known as Sunday Igboho, it was still studying the situation of events before making a formal statement.
Afenifere’s National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi, said “The news of the arrest was a surprise but the body is still studying the situation before making a formal statement as details of the arrest is still sketchy.”
Ajayi further noted that “security agencies appear to be more active in hunting those who are peacefully agitating for the rights and better deals for their people than they appear to be in dealing with bandits and terrorists who have deprived thousands of innocent Nigerians of their lives and properties.”
He said: “If half of the energy deployed to apprehend Nnamdi Kanu and Sunday Igboho had been deployed to the menace of terrorists and bandits who kill, rape, rob and kidnap people, we would not have been in the unfortunate security mess that we are presently.
“It is hoped that government will direct more attention to addressing issues that gave birth to ethnic agitations. The earlier this is done the better.”
Sunday Igboho and his wife Ropo, a German citizen, were arrested by the International Criminal Police Organisation (Interpol) on Monday night while they tried to catch a flight to Germany.
Similarly, the Lead counsel to Sunday Igboho, Yomi Alliyu (SAN) in a statement on Tuesday, July 20, 2021 described the arrest of his client as shocking and urged the Government of Germany, Benin Republic and the International Community “to rise up and curb the impunity of the Nigerian Government by refusing any application for extradition of our Client who already has application before the International Criminal Court duly acknowledged”.
The Department of State Services had declared Sunday Igboho wanted after allegedly finding illegal ammunition at his Ibadan residence in the Soka area on July 1, 2021.
