A call has gone to the members of the Association of Tourism Boats and Water Transport Operators of Nigeria, to brace up and take advantage of the over three thousand, five hundred navigable channels across the Country and tap into their prospects for the development of water transportation in the County.
The Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority, NIWA, Dr. George Moghalu gave the charge during an Annual General Meeting of the Association held in Abuja. Dr. Moghalu who tasked the members of the Association on how much of the many channels they had explored so far, advised them to take advantage of the channels to open up and expand the various opportunities available in water transportation econmy.
He assured them that NIWA was determined to get Container bearing heavy duty consignments, out of the nation’s highways through efficient water transportation so as to prevent pressure and damage on the roads infrastructure.
Dr. Moghalu explained that a Contract for the construction of a Jetty at Illa, in Delta State, would be awarded soon and commended the members of the Association for their years of dedication and sacrifice to ensure that water transportation thrives as a business.
Responding, the President of the Association, Chief Tazan Balogun commended the continued efforts of NIWA towards changing the narratives of water transportation in the Country and pledged a workable collaboration with the Agency for a mutual benefits.
