In its continued bid to ensure that youths in Lagos State become more productive and build the right skills for employability, Lagos State Government through the Ministry of Wealth Creation and Employment on Tuesday, July 6, 2021 organised a mindset re-orientation programme for youths.
In her address at the programme held at Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Alausa, the Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment, Hon. Mrs. Yetunde Arobieke, disclosed that the theme chosen for the programme “Realities of the global job market”, no doubt better describes the present realities within the state and on a global perspective.
Arobieke recalled that in the past year, her ministry organised a Mindset re-orientation program, which was aimed at creating Entrepreneurship skills and positive mindset in youths and nurturing our adolescents through the path of growth vis a vis skills development that would derived from successful experience.
“The dearth of white collar job is obvious in the society and it is necessary to re-orientate the mind of our youths to be flexible towards growth mindset and the realities of the dynamic labour market, and also modify their behaviour”, she said.
She stated that the initiative will help youths channel their energy properly towards career skills that will improve their standard of living, just as she also implored them to consider both technical and vocational training that can make them self-reliant beyond white-collar jobs.
“A well orientated and empowered youth would have been well educated, informed and equipped with necessary information on vocational competence and other skills needed for livelihood, especially re-orientation of the mindset of the youths on facing realities of life and labour market, and to enhance the leadership and employability skills of the youths in recognition of the gap between skills possessed by applicants and needed by employers, considering the huge mis-match in the labour market”, Arobieke said.
She assured the youths that government will not only train them but will also ensure that they have easy access to finance for their business ideas through the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF),
“The present administration ably led by our compassionate Governor, Bababjide Olusola Sanwo-olu is confident that in the years ahead, Mindset re-orientation programme on the youths that will lay credence to their ability, would also help re-draw the map of economic empowernent”, she said
Also, the Chairman, Lagos House of Assembly Committee on Wealth Creation and Employment, Honourable Jude Idimogu,, urged all the youths participating in the programme to be focused and make good use of the opportunity, adding that despite all the challenges abound in the country, “we can only make this country the way we want. No matter how you do in a foreign country, you can always be a second citizen, but in your own country, you always a first citizen. Nigeria belong to us and we must make it to become great, especially the youth”, Idimogu said.
