According to a post on social media, Peter Obi’s involvement led to the release of 500,000 Nigerians who were serving death sentences in Singapore.
The message states, “Breaking News: Singapore freed 500,000 Nigerians on death row after Peter Obi petitioned on their behalf.”
The post was first disseminated by @DattiYusufahmed, a social media user who appears to have duplicated the social media profile of Datti Baba-Ahmed, the Labour Party’s vice presidential candidate.
The article was published on the newly renamed Twitter account before being taken down. Additionally, it was reported as breaking news on a news website called Dailyexcessive.
Using Yandex, a reverse image search on one of the photos of brown-clad inmates peering out from behind bars revealed that the photo had been taken at Rwanda’s Gitara prison 5, which housed Hutu inmates.
Insightnaijatv research revealed that @dattibabaahmed, not @DattiYusufahmed, is the vice presidential candidate for the Labour party’s Twitter account.
No reliable media outlet has covered the claim as 500,000 Nigerian inmates in Singapore were not released by Obi. The assertion is untrue.
