Guinea coup leaders have announced a nationwide curfew “until further notice” as well as the replacement of governors by the military.
The junta also said in a statement read out over national television that it would convene Conde’s cabinet ministers and other top officials at 11:00 am (1100 GMT) Monday in the capital Conakry.
“Any refusal to attend will be considered a rebellion”, the statement added.
The country’s governors and other top administrators will be replaced by the military, the statement said.
InsightnaijaTV had reported the coup leader, Mamady Doumbouya, announced the dissolution of the government as well as abrogation of the constitution and closure of the border, after Special Forces seized power on Sunday, arresting the President, Alpha Conde.
International communities, including the United Nations (UN), have however, condemned the military takeover of Government.
UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres wrote on Twitter, ‘Any takeover of the government by force of the gun is condemnable,’ and said that he is personally following the situation in Guinea very closely.
“I strongly condemn any takeover of the government by force of the gun and call for the immediate release of President Alpha Conde”, Guterres added.
Also, the US State Department in a statement on Sunday, urged authorities in Guinea to avoid ‘extra-constitutional’ actions that will only erode Guinea’s prospects for peace, stability, and prosperity.
The US condemned the president’s ouster, with State Department spokesperson, Ned Price warning that “violence and any extra-constitutional measures will only erode Guinea’s prospects for peace, stability, and prosperity.”
Price added that the junta’s ‘actions could limit the ability of the United States and Guinea’s other international partners to support the country.’
Josep Borrell, the European Union’s High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, called for “respect for the state of law, the interests of peace and the well-being of the Guinean people.”
Also, the African Union (AU) on Sunday, condemned the coup and called for the release of President Alpha Conde.
“The current African Union chairman, Felix Tshisekedi, and the chairman of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, condemn any seizure of power by force and call for an immediate release of President Alpha Conde”, the AU said in a statement.
