Despite applauding Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Labour Party (LP), for being acceptable, Ebonyi State Governor Dave Umahi is sceptical that Obi will win the election next year.
After paying a visit to President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House, Umahi gave a speech on Friday in Abuja. He asserts that even while Obi’s level of acceptance across the nation is heartening, particularly for the southeast region, it won’t be sufficient to overturn the decision.
“So, while my party takes the victory, he would have prepared a very good ground for the south-east presidency, so that nobody is going to write us off. And you can see the level of his acceptability, which does not translate to victory over APC. I’m sure of that,” the governor told the press after the visit.
“But it’s a good movement. And it reassures the south-east people and the entire country that we are accepted, you know; that we will one day become the president of this country. It is very important.”

According to Umahi, the “Peter Obi movement” is based on justice, equity, and fairness. Although he insisted that “it may not translate to an outright win because I must defend my party; I must wish my party well and I have the ticket of my party, it may translate to a close victory.” However, whether or not what he is doing there has significance, it is significant elsewhere as well.
He added that Bola Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress‘ (APC) presidential candidate, is likely to prevail in the upcoming election, claiming that the party has the “structure” and “spread” necessary to do so.
