As the campaign for the presidential election in 2023 heats up, various bodies, political actors, and stakeholders are plotting how to ensure that their interests and objectives are not blocked by others and how to stay ahead of the pack.
One of the most pressing topics is zoning and who should be the next president of the United States. President Muhammadu Buhari, a northerner, will have been in power for eight years by May of next year. Many people believe that the country’s next president should come from the south for the sake of fairness and equity, with the southeast being regarded as the most deserving zone to produce the next president.
Many people from the south, particularly those on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform, have expressed their intentions to run for president, with a few betting that the party will zone the presidential ticket to the south.
However, rumours surfaced yesterday that the opposition party will not embrace zoning and has decided to open the presidential nomination to all candidates.
The opposition party’s zoning committee suggested an open race for the party’s presidential ticket in 2023, contrary to the expectations of its southern members.
The 37-member zoning committee of the party, which made the decision on Tuesday in the Benue State Governor’s Lodge in Asokoro, Abuja, cited ‘exigency of time’ as the reason for its proposal.
Another reason the committee provided for abandoning zoning was the large voter turnout in the North and the party’s intention to return to power, which appeared to indicate that the party is favorable to the emergence of its presidential candidate from a specific region.
According to a leaked document, the committee noted that while zoning was indicated in the party’s constitution, time constraints forced them to abandon the plan.
However, organizations like the Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the Pan-Niger Delta Forum, and the Middle Belt Forum were outraged by the committee’s decision, with some claiming it would hurt the PDP’s chances in the 2023 elections.
However, the PDP committee justified their judgment in a document titled, “Recommendations of PDP Zoning Committee,” stated, “ Zoning, as in our party constitution, is affirmed. In spite of the above, the ticket is thrown open, this time around due to the exigency of the time.
“Our party is encouraged to always make the issue of zoning very clear at least six months before sales of forms.
“Our party should commend the efforts of some of our contestants on the issue of consensus candidacy; the efforts should be seen to a peaceful and logical conclusion.”

Today, I went to the beach with my kids. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She put the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is completely off topic but I had to tell someone!
