As the 2023 general elections approach, a socio-political group known as “The Green Alliance Movement” (TGA) claimed on Saturday that the incumbent Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Godwin Emefiele, is the best candidate for the presidency.
The organization also stated that Mr. Emefiele has showed competency in the handling of the country’s monetary policy, prompting the call for him to run for president in 2023.
The movement’s Convener, Barrister Wale Fapohunda, said in a news conference in Abuja that Nigeria needs a capable, visionary, and dynamic leader like Emefiele to take the country to the next level.
He added that if the CBN Governor proclaims his intention in running for President on the ruling All Progressive Congress platform today, he will be the youngest among those who have expressed interest thus far.
“As the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, we believe that he possesses the skill, intellectual wherewithal, wit, and managerial acumen to navigate any form of political obstacles that will come his way as a leader,” he said. He is a 60-year-old man, so I wouldn’t call him young, but he has a lot of experience.
“Based on what he had done in CBN, we do not doubt our minds whatsoever that his presidency will have a positive impact on the nation Nigeria”.
The Green Alliance Movement, according to Barrister Fapohunda, is an autonomous organization with no ties to CNN’s governor.
He added that “If he decides not to run, which of course is not possible, we will continue as a movement. I can tell you authoritatively, with the little I know about him, that as a patriotic and detribalized person, who wants the progress of the country, by the grace of almighty God he will run”.
On her, the Director of Mobilization Ms. A. Angela said the group is calling on Mr. Godwin Emefiele to run for the highest office in the country, the President of Nigeria, in 2023.
“We believe that he is the right person to lead this nation. We believe he will lead us to find peace and the security we are all yearning for. We believe he will bring us prosperity. Nigeria needs progress and Mr. Emefiele will not only bring peace to us but will build a strong Nigeria that we will all be proud of. He will create jobs and strengthen our economy,” she concluded.
The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria is Mr. Godwin Emefiele (CBN). He worked in commercial banking for over 26 years, most recently as Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Zenith Bank PLC, one of Nigeria’s largest banks with over 7,000 employees, US$3.2 billion in shareholder funds, and subsidiaries in Ghana, Sierra Leone, Gambia, South Africa, China, and the United Kingdom.
Zenith Bank had strengthened its position as Africa’s leading financial institution under Emefiele’s leadership, gaining national and international recognition and endorsement for significant improvements in key performance areas such as corporate governance, service delivery, and the deployment of cutting-edge ICT.
He was a lecturer in Finance and Insurance at two Nigerian universities prior to his banking career. Mr. Emefiele graduated from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, with a degree in Banking and Finance. He is also a graduate of Stanford University, Harvard University, and the Wharton Graduate School of Business, where he studied Negotiation, Service Excellence, Critical Thinking, Leading Change, and Strategy.
